Yoga Central - Camel Pose

This is the second article in our yoga central series and today we will be looking at a pose known as camel pose or Ustrasana. We will look at how to properly carry out the pose, the benefits you can get from it and anything that you need to consider before beginning. Please read the entire article before trying the pose.

How to Carry Out the Pose

Although the name may make you feel this will be a simple pose to carry out, it may not be the case if you spend most of your day sitting so take it slowly at first. Below we have put together step by step instructions on how to carry out this pose successfully:

1. Begin the pose by kneeling on the floor with the thighs straight up and the knees hip width apart. Turn your thighs in slightly and narrow your hips. Firm but do not harden your bottom and imagine you are pulling your sitting bones up into your body. Firm your shins and the top of your feet against the floor.

2. Place your hands on your bottom with the base of the palms at the top of the bottom and the fingers facing down to the floor. Press the tail forward but make sure your pelvis does not push out. To help stop this from happening press your thighs back. As you inhale lift your heart by pressing the shoulder blades against the back.

3. Lean back against the tail bone and shoulder blades leaving your head so that your chin is near your chest. If you are new to this pose then this is probably where you should stay. Alternatively you can lower your hands to your feet. If you need to your can lower one hand, slightly twisting your body and then when you come back to a straight position you can lower the other hand. If this action causes your back to compress then you should lift your heels by turning your toes under.

4. Make sure your lower ribs aren’t sticking out as this can cause the belly to harden and the back to compress. Lift the front ribs up from the pelvis and then lift the back ribs away from the pelvis to lengthen the lower back. Press your hands against the soles of your feet with the base of the palms on the heels of the feet and the fingers pointing towards the toes. Turn the arms so the elbows face forward by squeezing the shoulder blades. You can leave your head in a neutral position or drop it back but be careful not to strain the neck.

5. Stay in this pose for 30-60 seconds. To come out put your hands on the front of your pelvis and roll up leading with your heart. Push back into child pose and rest for a short while.

Tips and Precautions

You should not practise this pose if you suffer from either high or low blood pressure. In addition you should avoid this pose if your suffer from migraines or insomnia or if you have any injuries to your neck or back.

Many beginners to this pose can find it difficult to get their hands on their feet without straining their back. There are a number of things you can do to help. Firstly try raising your heels but if this is still no good you can try resting to blocks at their highest just outside your feet and leaning back on them. If you find this difficult then you can use a chair. Place the chair over the shins and rest the seat against the bottom and lean back on the chair.

Benefits and Focus

The pose will help to stretch out the front of the body, the ankles, thighs and groins as well as strengthening the lower back. It can help to improve posture as well as stimulating the organs in the abdomen and neck.Therapeutically this pose can help with a number of respiratory ailments as well as mild backache, fatigue, anxiety and menstrual cramps.

There is a general belief that writing funny stuff comes naturally to some. Funny people have a gene, a natural gift which can’t be produced by learning ‘techniques’. This may be true but there are definitely some tips that can make one sound funny!

Humor Is Based On Possibility

Humor is a point of view and an approach that almost everyone has as a child. There are several times when one reads some funny stuff, laughs and says, “That is SO true” and a lot of times it is. Humor can be based on truth of what can be or what is.

Use Of Strange Characters

Choosing funny names for characters and experimenting with more than just ordinary people can make a script or a piece of writing sound really funny. A writer can use motifs like aliens, super-humans, inanimate things coming to life, or even animals.

Copy And Paste Jokes

If running out of material, a writer can copy jokes from a random email which is going around. For instance, a joke on the difference between how women and men drive. Even if people have read this numerous times, it will still tickle their funny bone. Similarly jokes around Clothing Stuff, online stuff, and family stuff can also draw out big laughter.

Break The Rules

A writer writing funny stuff should not feel obligated to follow proper grammar and spellings. The aim of crazy stuff is to make people laugh and not to improve their English.

Always End The Piece On A Positive Note

Laughter or funny stuff is about being positive. People love it when they read something that ends on a happy note. Hence, give them that.

Writer Should Write About Something S/he Knows

It is equally important to be knowledgeable about one’s subject to make its presentation appear amusing and funny to others. This is important because what one knows permits them to make use of excruciating facts that can make even the most boring of things sound interesting and hilarious.

Talk About Things That People Like To Joke About

The most favorite topics in general are annoying bosses or frustrating ex’s. These things, besides stupid stuff, always stir up a lot of interest and are normally successful in tickling the reader’s funny bone.

Be Original

A writer should never try to copy other people’s style. It’s important to be original and have one’s own strange view of things. The reason why actors like Jim Carrey or Robin Williams are so funny is because they have originality to them.

Don’t Analyze Too Much

Trying to explain why something is funny is not funny at all. Hence, it is best not to analyze what one writes.

The best way of understanding humor is to find out why people start laughing when they are tickled physically. Some might say it feels funny or maybe, because some nerve gets stimulated in the process.

However, another explanation (which makes more sense here) is that people are unable to tickle themselves. They feel frustrated, helpless and confused in a way that they react by laughing to release anxiety. People like things to be controllable, comfortable, and predictable. The unusual, overstated, or unexpected thing is intimidating and uncomfortable. And a lot of times using this fact to create funny stuff can help make a great piece of writing.

Funny and cute animated cartoon characters

Today not only Hollywood and superstars stature is phenomenal, but fictional carton characters also have achieved name, fame, and popularity. There are many TV channels, programs and films made on cartoon characters. Such kinds of movies have the long list of kids fan following. Many animated cartoon characters have gained popularity and audience’s love for the films’ success and their animals’ appearance and characteristics.

Donald Duck

Donald Duck is also an animated comic-book character from Walt Disney Productions. It is a a white anthropomorphic duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. He often wears sailor shirt, cap, and a red or black bowtie. Donals’ first appearance was in the Silly Symphonies cartoon The Wise Little Hen in 1934. He was similar to his modern appearance with the same feather and beak color. However, his features are more elongated and his body plumper.

For the Birds is an animated short film, produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The smaller birds start taunting and teasing the much larger and awkward-looking bird by sticking up the top feather on the very top of their head.

Scrat (Ice Age)

Scrat, a saber toothed squirrel, is viewed as a breakout character. This character appears in the Ice Age film series including the 2002 film Ice Age, its sequels Ice Age: The Meltdown, Dawn of the Dinsaurs. This animal always put his life in danger to obtain and defend acorns, with whom this character is obessed.

Wall-E

Wall-E is a character in 2008 computer-animated science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by Andrew Stanton. Ponyo

Ponyo is the daughter of a powerful wizard and magically transforms herself into a real human girl. However, by crossing from her watery world onto land, Ponyo has created a dangerous imbalance in nature, leading to the moon draw closer to the earth, sea level rising, and a giant tsunami in the making.

Historical Fiction and Telling Jokes Considered

Not all jokes are timeless, jokes that were told in different eras in history, with different uses of the words, and different cultures can easily get lost in translation. For someone writing historical fiction they need to make sure that the jokes that they are telling in the book are authentic, but they have to be careful which types of jokes they tell because some of those jokes will not be funny to the reader in the present period.

It takes a lot of research to do it correctly, and if you do it exactly correctly your book might be humorless, because no one who is reading it today will find the jokes are funny. Indeed it probably isn’t funny to today’s reader also considering all the funny things we have these days in our current era. Humor is everywhere in our society and one has to be very competitive to get a laugh these days.

Nevertheless, this is where a historical fiction novelist needs to figure out how they want to play it. Some jokes are funny now that were actually funny then, but not many. All books need humor, so it takes a little bit of work and extra research to figure out what jokes are translatable from the culture your writing in and the historical time period, to the present day.

Just the other day, I was reading a historical fiction novel, where the characters told a joke and they both had a laugh. The joke was one that we might like here today, but I am almost certain that no one in that time period would’ve told such a joke, it was totally out of context.

Now, I suppose someone simply reading through the novel wouldn’t have noticed, but I did, and I guess I have less respect for the author now, then I once did, because I felt as if it wasn’t authentic, and that this Historical Fiction writer didn’t do their homework. Please consider all this.
